Mrs. Saunders is the new swim coach for Galileo Magnet High School, bringing a fresh perspective and knowledge in coaching. She shares her perspective on why she took on the role, her goals for the upcoming season, and her approach to fostering a successful swim team.
Having coached sideline and competition cheer for eight years before joining Galileo in 2021, Mrs. Saunders is no stranger to team sports. She loves coaching and the relationships built with students outside of the classroom and getting to form those bonds. She said she missed being a part of a team since coming to Galileo. Her children’s involvement on their swim team played a decision in her role, as she has spent a lot of time helping them prepare and practice swimming. She says, “I just waited patiently for the right opening to come up.” She is very excited to be the new coach this year and building on the team’s foundation.
This year Mrs.Saunders says, “My hope is to just improve over last year and continue to build a stronger and larger team.” Mrs. Saunders believes that the most important qualities in a swimmer is a combination of physical, mental, and technical qualities. Strength in the core, arms, and legs with timing and rhythm and most importantly drive as an individual and a team member are crucial. She says if you are nervous about swimming “give it a try, no one has ever failed trying”.
Will this year’s team surpass last year’s? Mrs. Saunders is confident. With her passion for coaching and dedication to her school and students, she is ready to make waves and lead the team to victory.
