On Tuesday, October 15, Galileo hosted a D.E.A.R hour during advisory. Students filled out a mental health contract and were able to take the rest of the time to read their books. If they didn’t have one, students gathered in the library to pick out something that interested them. Mrs. Larking also presented a video of a reading challenge open to all students, so don’t hesitate to join in!
Throughout each advisory, students were found with a wide variety of books that ranged from The Fault in Our Stars by John Green to 1984 by George Orwell.
Good Girl, Bad Blood, by Holly Jackson, is about a high school girl solving crimes in her town. Junior Olivia “Ash” Perkins says that Pip is their favorite character, while Connor is his least favorite. Perkins received this book from their friend, sophomore Kloe Marshall.
Another interesting book found during this hour is The Forgotten Colony by JB Ryder. “It’s basically the aftermath of global warming if we fail to fix it,” junior Miley “Romero” Murphy states in their brief interview. Murphy’s favorite character is Ryker Garagin, while he detests Carver. Murphy bought this book from Amazon with a simple search.
Senior Lucas Wyatt read 1984 by George Orwell. The book was covered in sticky notes and annotations on almost every page. Senior JaCori Johns was reading the same book. Junior Piper Potts immersed herself in The Fault in Our Stars with junior Zymyrah Lindsey.
The D.E.A.R. hour provided a much-needed break from the daily routine, allowing students to unwind, explore new stories, and engage with literature in a relaxed setting. Events like these not only promote a love for reading but also offer students a chance to connect with each other over shared literary experiences. As the reading challenge presented by Mrs. Larking continues, Galileo students have an exciting opportunity to dive deeper into the world of books and embrace the benefits of regular reading.
